For scientists, bonds and connections are essential to the working of the universe; for mystics, love is the ultimate principle. From the depths of physics to the delights of being human, relationships make life possible.
The mechanistic view of reality which sees the world as separate objects, separate individuals, communities and nations, has led to fragmentation in every aspect of life. We are now realizing that, from quarks to people, from gut bacteria to galaxies, it’s all about interconnectedness, cooperation, and symbiosis.
This year, SAND will be bringing together some of the brightest minds in science, along with spiritual teachers from various traditions and artists, in a quest to expand and deepen our understanding and experience of our relational nature through the two lenses of science and spirituality. We will explore and integrate our human knowledge and experience around the theme of relationships. We will inquire into the many scales of relationship we are part of, from microbes and bacteria to mushrooms and trees, to people and families, to galaxies and black holes.
At the end of the day, no matter how complex the field of study becomes, the innate intelligence and reflective nature of the universe shines through. Love is what breathes life into the equations; Love is the field in which the quarks and human beings relate.
We will meet you there.
During this event, Lorraine will be offering gentle but profound yoga classes entitled 'The Intimate Embrace of Shiva & Shakti'.
These classes are an exploration into the authentic meaning of tantra through yoga asana. The divine feminine (Shakti) and masculine (Shiva) are united through the play of consciousness and energy within each and every individual being. In our yoga practice, we can directly experience this rather than intellectually knowing it and begin to truly integrate that knowledge within the body.
Throughout the class, we discover the different levels within which the yogis call the five sheaths or pancha maya kosa. Through conscious enquiry, we can create new pathways of connection to the more subtle layers that can often be missed. In this subtlety lies our depth of wisdom and blissfulness which we are constantly searching for in all the wrong places.
And at the same time, we look honestly at all other levels, not denying anything that arises in the way of difficult sensations, feelings, emotions or thoughts but simply meeting them, fully feeling them and therefore understanding the nature of them.
What arises is a greater intimacy and empathy of the totality of who we are and the understanding that Shiva & Shakti lie within, and are ultimately One.
Mystical poetry and verses of the ancient text Vijnana Bhairava Tantra are read throughout to inspire and guide us deeper.
